Job-posting history for humans

Know how old that “new” job really is.

Ghost Jobs is a proposed browser extension and community log that remembers job postings after the job board forgets them. It helps applicants distinguish genuinely fresh opportunities from stale listings, recurring “zombie” requisitions and jobs associated with repeated no-response reports.

Signals are evidence and community observations — not proof that an employer is acting deceptively.

Ghost warningAging listing plus candidate no-response reports can warrant caution.

Zombie warningThe same normalized role appears to expire and return repeatedly.

The job board shows “posted.” Ghost Jobs remembers “first seen.”

The extension would extract a small set of durable fields — employer, normalized title, location, source URL, description fingerprint and visible posting age — and compare them with previous observations. A repost can then be recognized as another appearance of an older underlying requisition instead of automatically being treated as a brand-new lead.

1. Recognize

Show a compact status icon directly on supported job boards. Clicking it highlights the job area and explains the signal.

2. Remember

“Add to our DB” stores a normalized record so future versions of the same role can be linked across dates and job sites.

3. Report

Applicants can record outcomes such as “I’ve been ghosted.” Community reports add context without pretending to prove employer intent.

Designed to warn, not to accuse.

A useful implementation should separate observed facts from inferred labels: first-seen date, repost count, sources and user reports are facts in the database; “ghost” or “zombie” is a confidence-based signal derived from those facts. Employers should also have a way to dispute or update a record, and the product should avoid claiming a company is “not really hiring” unless that can actually be substantiated.
